The Eve of the Feast of St. Brigid
Its the eve of the feast of one of Ireland's great saints, St. Brigid, and we gathered with friends at our place in St. Louis. Brigid is known as the great saint and abbess who was integral in the conversion of Ireland to Christianity. As is an old tradition in rural Ireland, and a recent one in our home, we baked bairn brack bread and had friends over to celebrate on the eve of the feast. We were fortunate as our friends came over one at a time spreading the evening out for a wonderful night of friendship and fun. Now, we started with evening prayer, from the common of virgins, and were fortunate enough to find a beautiful litany to St. Brigid which rightly refers to her as a shining light of virtue and sanctity, cornerstone of the monastic institute in the Isle of Saints, mediatrix for the Irish race, protectress of the holy faith planted by Saint Padrig "whose one desire was to satisfy the poor, drive out hardship, and spare every miserable man." These words call to mind the greatness of her Christian vocation and place in Irish history and our heart. We are blessed by her intercession. I hope we have many more evenings like this one!
