Bishop and missionary, born in Inisbrefny, in County Cavan, around 550. Aedan studied in Wales, at a famed institute of Christian learning under St. David. In 580, he returned to Ireland, going to Ferns on the coast of Wexford. Ferns, the area in which Aedan conducted his priestly ministry, was elevated at this time to the status of a diocese. He was called Mogue, "the beloved Aidan;" Maedoc-Edan and Moedoc are names for Aidan fo Ferns as well. In the Armagh library can be foudn one of Aiden's personal belongings, the Bell of St. Mogue and the Broec Moedoc, an irish reliquary, a stamped leather satchel and the shrine to encase the relics.
