Saint Comgall was a sixth century founder and Abbot of an Irish Monastery in Bangor, County Down in Northern Ireland. He was born about 516 in Ylster, Ireland, and studied under Saint Fintan at Cluain Eidnech Monastery and Saint Kieran. He was the spiritual teacher of both St. Cronan and St. Columbanus, and many of the monks responsible for the evangelization of Europe in the 6th and 7th century.
After living the life of a hermit he founded the monastery at Bangor, County Down, and became its first abbot. At one point the monastery is said to have housed 8,00 monks. He was a missionary to Scotland and the Picts, founding a monastery in Heth. Saint Comgall is a reported miracle worker and is said to have restored eye sight to a penitent.
St. Comgall died in 601.
